Call for additional maintainers

As mentioned in the README on the repos front page - we're in need of additional maintainers.
We have several field where a helping hand would be appreciated:

• triaging issues/ discussions/ gitter chat
• keeping docs clean and up to date
• extending the /example app with other useful scenes/ feature showcases
• fixing (upcoming) bugs
• adding features
• extending unit tests
• extending e2e detox tests
• Mapbox v11
• Fabric
• either extend to v10 of mapbox
• make compatible with mapLibre 5.12.0 and above

Especially native contributors (java/ obj-c/kotlin/swift) would be highly welcome!

I just want to state, that you do not need special permissions or something of the like to just go out and start contributing.
Adding a comment to this discussion is a nice first step, however the proof is in the pudding as they say... so go ahead, pick your issue or feature and start opening a PR :)

Hi. We use mapbox extensively. Would like to help keep this library up to date with the upstream native libs so that all features are available. I can do both android & ios native. I'm not an expert in either but I know enough to extend what's already been done. What's the best way to understand where we are currently at in this respect?

hi there 👋🏿, thanks a bunch for volunteering.
I'd love for the repo to have some sort of documentation for the general architecture for new people to find their way around the project.
In all honesty, I believe that atm that is one of the most important tasks (besides the general fires not turning into firenados 🌪️ 🔥).

Does not even have to be too in depth, think more of a lay of the land.

So people for example understand, that UserLocation.js depends on locationManager.js which in turn talks to Android: LocationModule / iOS: LocationModule => which finally talks to the native mapbox/maplibre sdk ....

Maybe not the most prestigious task in the beginning, however I think this is a great way to get to know the code base 👍🏿
No one will be as knowledgeable as you when you're done :D

I wouldn't want to see this library go anywhere, I'd be willing to occasionally fix (upcoming) bugs and add features. I really want to see 3D implemented on the mobile side of mapbox. Let me know if you still need contributors.

How about a compatibility for Web with react-map-gl?
I have thought that it is so difficult to merge with it because many components were different.
WebMercator, StaticMap, viewportChange...

But recently, that repo changed the structure to similar one to this repo.
Now, I can share the components on web and native easily and simply.
If this repo works on both native and web, more people will be motivated to use this repo!

Reviewing the project I notice several components written in classes, is there any discussion about whether it is a priority to change them to functional components or if you have the idea of ​​migrating them?

@wootsbot it's not a priority. Migrating to typescript is more a priority. Migrating to functional components would be nice as well, but those changes are not easy to review, and also we had trouble with react-docgen and functional compoents.

@yewyewxd thanks much, your env seems to be right. I'm not 100% our dev tools run fine on windows, as some of our scripts in package.json is a unix shell script. Not sure if that works on windows it could via WSL.

Checking out and running example app is a good place to start.
