Hi, I'm Rui πŸ‘‹

I enjoy building software, but I'm even more interested in understanding the systems behind it.

I'm a senior software engineer based in Portugal, with ~15 years across frontend and full-stack roles. Most of my day-to-day work revolves around TypeScript, Node.js, and React, while my curiosity usually takes me into distributed systems, cloud infrastructure, AI, automation, and developer tooling.

What I'm working on

  • 🧠 Local AI inference β€” self-hosted LLMs, open-weight models, and privacy-preserving architectures
  • πŸ”€ LLM routing β€” BYOK and multi-provider API routing patterns
  • πŸš€ A SaaS product built on top of all of the above

What I'm interested in

  • πŸ€– AI agents and LLM applications
  • πŸ› οΈ Developer experience and automation
  • ☁️ Cloud architecture & AWS
  • πŸ” Search, embeddings, knowledge retrieval β€” and lately, ontologies
  • πŸ‡ͺπŸ‡Ί European sovereign AI and EU AI Act / GDPR-aware system design
  • πŸš€ Infrastructure that scales

Lately I've been exploring how AI changes software engineering, from coding agents to retrieval systems and autonomous workflows β€” and how far you can push inference on hardware you own.

Tech I enjoy working with

Languages

  • TypeScript
  • JavaScript
  • SQL
  • Java and Python (occasionally)

Backend

  • Node.js
  • Express
  • REST APIs
  • PostgreSQL
  • OpenSearch

Frontend

  • React (modern data-fetching patterns and developer experience tooling like oxlint and oxfmt)
  • HTML/CSS

Cloud & DevOps

  • AWS (including Athena & data-lake querying)
  • CloudFormation
  • Docker
  • GitLab CI
  • GitHub Actions

AI

  • LLM integrations & API routing
  • Local inference, open-weight models
  • Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG)
  • Embeddings & vector databases
  • AI coding assistants (heavy Claude Code and Github Copilot user)

Things I like learning about

Not everything I learn becomes code.

Sometimes it becomes an obsession.

Recently that has included:

  • Neo-cloud infrastructure & GPU clusters
  • Robotics β€” ROS 2, simulation, autonomous ground vehicles
  • Networking
  • Financial markets & value investing
  • Classic automotive engineering

Current focus

  • Building better AI-powered developer workflows
  • Shipping a privacy-first AI product on self-hosted infrastructure
  • Learning more about cloud infrastructure beyond application development
  • Understanding how large-scale systems are designed

Philosophy

Stay curious.

Every technology is more interesting once you understand why it exists.
